My Thoughts: Golfwang’s New Direction

GolfWang has a new look whether you like it or not.

If you aren’t already familiar with Golf, it’s a clothing brand run by Tyler Okonma, also known as, Tyler the Creator. Golf is typically associated as being eccentric, loud, and unique with it’s colorways, graphics, and patterns. But as of 2018, Tyler has decided to take Golf into a new direction.

It honestly wasn’t that big of a surprise to me. Like most people who’ve been following him for awhile, I’ve noticed his style evolve over the years into something more…mature? All I’m trying to say is that he dresses like someone’s grandfather. But, in like the best way possible.

I’m not going to lie, when I first saw this tweet I was disappointed. What I loved most about Golf was the colorways Tyler used in his clothing that would be impossible to find being used in any other brands at the mall. Not to mention, the graphic tees, with I guess as Tyler sees them as, “gaudy logos.” But I loved them, as most did. To the point where it was worth the horrible, heart-breaking shipping prices. So when he mentioned “brown” and “earth tones,” I really didn’t know what to expect. Then on August 29th, Tyler finally released the 2018 autumn lookbook/preview.

I was surprised to see that the line was still vibrant and that he ended up including  graphic tees. But, to be honest,  I’m not a fan of this release. A lot of the graphics I found just plain boring. For example, the “Jesus Freak” and all the new Golf logo graphics. I’m also very tired of Tyler re-using the same designs on new clothing. For instance, the “Bee Longsleeve Polo.” It’s like been there done that. It was cool the first time Tyler

introduced it but now it’s overdone. Nonetheless, he can put out whatever his heart
desires. I just won’t be the one to consume it. However, there were some pieces that stuck out to me. I love the “Landscape Cardigan,” “Sex Ed” shirt/shorts, and the “No Nukes Short Sleeve Button-up.”

You may be wondering how is this a “new direction” for Golf considering that he still is using fun colors and creating T-shirts? But, this release can be best described as having more “pieces than clothes.” And by that I mean, Tyler has branched out to creating items one would associate with high-end designers such as basic formal button-ups, alligator skin card holders, and even a purse (or according to A$AP Rocky, a satchel). This season definitely shows a maturity in Golf. Though I don’t believe this is one of their best seasons, I still respect it and the work Tyler put into it.
